Methodology of this web hosting company comparison

First of all, I would like to say that this article will be different from most other articles of the "best web host" / "web host comparison" / "TOP 10 best web hosters" type in the sense that I will not give you a hierarchical list but rather some food for thought so that you yourself can find the best web host and the hosting that best suits your needs.

Indeed, it makes no sense to talk about "best" hosters in my opinion since most hosters offer several hosting plans and the hosting plans of different hosters will each have strengths and weaknesses.

In the end, establishing the ranking of the "best" hosts is as relevant as establishing a ranking of the "best" sports or the "best" musical instruments in my opinion: it all depends on the criteria you choose.

Is the best host the cheapest? The one with the hosting plans offering the best performance? The one with the best customer service? The one that pollutes the least?

Rather than establishing a fixed ranking of hosts, I will rather in this article give you lists of hosts that I think are the best in relation to this or that criteria by choosing beforehand the criteria that I think are the most important. Then it's up to you to think about the hosting criteria that are important to you.

The criteria that I will use in this article are :

  • Ergonomics / simplicity of use
  • The quality of customer service
  • Type of website to host
In addition to this, to be as relevant as possible, note that I assume that I am addressing an audience of individuals/small businesses, i.e. an audience that :

  1. Does not need ultra robust and ;
  2. Does not have a large means / not an advanced knowledge of hosting management.

I will therefore focus on the shared hosting formulas of each hosting provider only, not to mention VPS, dedicated or cloud hosting.

Finally, my criteria do not include the overall performance level of the hosting solutions nor the price of these solutions. The reasons are simple: the "global performance level" is a composite criterion that is difficult to evaluate precisely and is not really relevant for entry-level/mid-range hosting solutions since all the hosting providers listed below offer precisely a similar level of performance that is more than enough for the average person. The price is not a relevant criterion in my opinion either, since prices are also relatively similar between hosts (between 1€ and 5€ per month for an entry-level offer).

This being clear, it's time to discover my choice of hosting providers!

Please note that I personally use the hosting solutions "WordPress Hosting" from Bluehost and "GoGeek" from SiteGround which are the most suitable solutions for my use that I could find.

Please also note that some of the hosting providers mentioned in this article offer affiliate programs. These programs allow you to pay the people who recommended them. I am registered to some of them. However, the opinions given about the web hosts in this article are not influenced by these programs.

Finally, please note that I don't know and don't pretend to know all the hosting solutions in the world (far from it!) and that I can't talk about solutions I don't know! There are certainly some very good solutions that I have never heard of. However, I will be happy to test them, so don't hesitate to send me information about the solution in question.

The best hosting providers offering free hosting packages

Let's already start with the "free" criterion which is a very particular criterion and which prevents us from comparing this type of hosters to others since this free service is always subject to certain conditions.
Indeed, the counterpart of the "free" hosting service will often be :

  • A domain that doesn't belong to you
  • Advertisements appearing on your site
  • Limitations in terms of storage space and bandwidth
  • The sale of other related services

The best hosting for your WordPress website and blog?

Once again, it is difficult to talk about the "best" host without first establishing a list of criteria that can be objectively rated.

In this part, I will therefore talk about the hosters that offer hosting packages specially created for WordPress.

Managing WordPress blogs myself for more than 10 years, I can only go in the direction of the hosters officially recommended by the WordPress development team and also recommend Bluehost and SiteGround who have been my choice of hosters for several years now.

Bluehost is a host that focuses almost exclusively on WordPress hosting and therefore has an excellent knowledge of the solution and will be able to make the best settings and offer you what you need.

Siteground, on the other hand, also offers many features for WordPress and has a very competent customer service.

The best hosting provider for your PrestaShop e-commerce ?

PrestaShop is the n°1 e-commerce solution in France and most of the serious hosting providers offer PrestaShop installation modules in their hosting formula.

PrestaShop, on the official website, recommend themselves 1&1 and Microsoft Azure hosting providers who are supposed to offer hosting offers specially adapted to host a PrestaShop structure.

Personally, I've been able to test 1&1 with a PrestaShop in the past and everything has always worked well. On the other hand, I have never tested Microsoft Azure but I've only heard good things about it.
