Bluehost is a web hosting company founded by Matt Heaton and Danny Ashworth in Provo, Utah. It employs 750 people who work 24 hours a day. Recommended by, they offer 1-Click installations in all their plans.

If there's a name you know in the web hosting world, Bluehost is probably leading the way with Inmotion and GreenGeeks. It was created in 1996, which makes it very old by web standards, but I like them anyway.

In this post, I take you behind the scenes and show you the features of my account. I will also tell you about a special offer for visitors of the Hosting Manual only at the bottom of this page (you can get a price of $2.95 instead of the usual $3.95/month).

Here's what the customer dashboard looks like:

When you finish reading this magazine, you will know what to expect from Bluehost and (just as important) what NOT to expect from them.

There's no doubt that they've built up a solid reputation over the decades, especially when it comes to hosting WordPress.

They are listed as one of the officials recommended hosters for WordPress blogs and offer an abundance of tools, bonuses, and resources to WordPress customers.

Ready to learn more? We'll go into more detail in our Bluehost magazine. But first, let's start with a few quick facts.

  • The plans look cheap at first glance, but not all of them are as cheap as they seem. You can start as low as $2.95 per month with shared hosting if you land a contract of this type. Otherwise, the Starter plan usually costs $7.99 per month, which is still quite reasonable. But WP plans are quite expensive, starting at $12.49 per month.
  • Get unmetered bandwidth with all accounts.
  • The Starter plan comes with 100 email accounts. The Plus and Business Pro plans offer an unlimited number of email accounts.
  • Get up to $200 bonus on marketing offers.
  • Enhanced cPanel makes it easy to set up and control your sites (see a demo here).

Decision: What level of service to choose?

Bluehost offers five main types of hosting plans:

  • Shared Hosting
  • VPS Hosting
  • Dedicated hosting
  • WordPress Hosting
  • Cloud sites
If you are looking for something inexpensive and basic, shared hosting is probably what you need. It's what most beginners and small businesses are looking for. Dedicated hosting is the most expensive option, suitable for large commercial businesses that need full control over their resources.
With dedicated hosting, you essentially rent a physical server. VPS hosting is an intermediate option where you share a physical server with others, but you have your virtual operating system, so the server runs as if it were physically yours. WordPress hosting is of course what it looks like - hosting optimized for WordPress customers. Let's look at the plan levels for each of them.

Shared Hosting

  • Basic: Starting at $3.49 per month, this plan increases to $7.99 per month at the regular price.
  • Plus: This plan is regularly priced at $10.99 per month.
  • Choice Plus: This plan is $23.99 per month.
These prices are all pretty good. But with this offer, you can make sure you get the best price! At the basic level, you get a website, 50 GB of space and unmetered bandwidth. You also get one domain, five parked domains, and 25 subdomains. Additional features include 5 email accounts with 100 MB of storage space each.

With the Plus or Choice Plus packages, you get unlimited websites and unmeasured space and bandwidth, which is great. You get one domain included and you can have an unlimited number of parked domains and subdomains.

Email accounts and storage space are unlimited, as well as $200 worth of marketing offers. Additionally, this includes Global CDN and SpamExperts (more than $24 per year in additional benefits).
The highest level plan is Business Pro. It includes up to $180 of additional annual benefits including two SpamExperts, a premium SSL, a dedicated IP address, domain privacy, improved performance, and SiteBackup Pro.

VPS Hosting

  • Standard: $19.99 for the first month, up to $29.99 thereafter
  • Enhanced: $29.99 for the first month, up to $59.99 thereafter
  • Ultimately: $59.99 for the first month, up to $119.99 thereafter
These prices are in line with typical VPS hosting costs across the industry. The speed for the first two plans is 2 processor cores, up to three and four cores for the top plan. You get 30 GB of SAN storage at the lowest level, up to 120 GB at the highest level. RAM ranges from 2 GB to 8 GB. You get 1 TB of bandwidth at the Standard level, up to 3 TB at the Ultimate level. Each level includes one domain. The Standard level includes one IP address; you get two with the rest. Each plan is backed by 24/7 support and a money-back guarantee.

Dedicated Hosting

  • Standard: $79.99 for the first month, $119.99 per month thereafter.
  • Enhanced: $99.99 for the first month, $159.99 per month thereafter.
  • Premium: $119.99 for the first month and $209.99 per month thereafter.
With either the Standard or Enhanced Plan, you get a 4 x 2.5 GHz processor. The Premium plan gives you a 4 x 3.3 GHz processor. Storage capacity ranges from 500GB to 1TB (mirrored), and RAM starts at 4GB at the Standard level and goes up to 16GB at the Premium level. You get 5TB of bandwidth at the Standard level, 10TB at the Enhanced level, and 15TB at the Premium level. A domain is included with each plan. You get three IP addresses at the Standard level, four at the Enhanced level, and five at the Premium level. All plans come with 24/7 service and a money-back guarantee.

WordPress Hosting

  • Basic: starting at $2.95 with a 36-month subscription
  • Plus: starting at $5.45/month with a 36-month subscription
  • Choice Plus: starting at $5.45/month with a 36-month subscription
These plans are similar to their shared hosting plans, and their cost is the same.
However, at the end of 2018, Bluehost introduced a new category: WordPress Pro.

WordPress Pro

These plans are quite expensive compared to their simple WordPress hosting and to what some competitors offer (many hosting providers sell WordPress hosting plans at the same prices as general-purpose shared hosting plans).

However, WordPress Pro at Bluehost is a big deal and one of the company's most popular services (with over a million sites hosted by the company).

The Pro plans run on high-performance VPS and offer improved site speed.

Build level features include basic analysis of Jetpack sites, marketing center, 100 free premium themes, daily backups, and malware detection and removal for increased security.

The Grow plan is an extra step with Jetpack Pro. Business rating tools allow your visitors to leave positive reviews on Yelp, Google, Yahoo or Bing for your business directly from your site. SEO tools give you real-time optimization tips on how to improve your search engine rankings. They are integrated into the marketing center where you can view statistics on your results in the major search engines.

The high-level ladder plan allows you to integrate Paypal and elastic search.

Please note that you have live support with Grow and Scale. It offers you hands-on assistance with design, functionality, or general questions from true WordPress experts, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

All plans come with a positive SSL wildcard, 24/7 service, and a money-back guarantee. These plans also include automatic plugin updates and regular backups, as well as a staging environment that allows you to build and test your WordPress site before publishing.

One feature that is probably not widely used is unlimited video compression. You can upload your videos without optimizing them for the web. Bluehost takes care of that. I didn't use Bluehost for streaming, but support told me that there is no restriction on the number of videos you can stream.

These are all great features, but you may still ask yourself, "Why would I pay so much for hosting WordPress? Bluehost plays a very active role in the WordPress community and has a core group of developers. This means that Bluehost can offer first-class customer support and solve even the complex problems that are unique to WP.

This does not mean that Bluehost is your only or best option. However, hosts like Siteground can easily compete with you at a lower cost.

How to Install WordPress on BlueHost

Characteristics of e-commerce

It is easy to set up an online shop with Bluehost, which offers many different shopping carts: Zen, Cube, Agora and OS Commerce. You benefit from SSL security for your transactions, a free generated certificate, and OpenPGP/GPG encryption.
Unlimited bandwidth is fine, but I'm pretty sure they would limit your account according to their fair use policy if your website had constant and exceptional traffic. There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. Bluehost has to pay for the bandwidth you use. This applies to all web hosting providers. I suggest you read my article on bandwidth and disk space.
The $200 of free marketing credits is also a great help if you own a store. You can use them to promote your business through Google, Facebook, Bing, and Twitter.
All that said, Bluehost is not particularly known for e-commerce, and some sites make it easier and faster to create a store. But Bluehost is an economical choice, and you'll have access to a ton of great features to help you sell online.

Security Features

Security is an area in which Bluehost excels. You get three layers of spam protection in the form of Spam Experts, Spam Hammer and Apache Spam Assassin. You also get protection for your inbox; it's easy to set up filters. Your folders are all password protected.
If you need to block access to your site, you can blacklist IP addresses. Secure Shell Access (SSH) is another great feature. It allows you to access configuration files individually and securely.
Bluehost also offers one-click integration with CloudFlare, which provides even better security features and speeds up your site! Cloudflare is particularly effective in thwarting DDOS attacks.

Refund Policy

Bluehost covers its plans with a 30-day money-back guarantee. This means that if you cancel within the first 30 days, you will receive a full refund. If you decide to cancel later, you will not get a pro-rated refund for the period of your hosting contract that you have not used. Domain fees are non-refundable. I haven't tried to get a refund with them yet, so I can't say how easy it is.

Ease of use

Bluehost makes it easy for you to set up and manage your website. The improved cPanel interface is as easy to use as it is: just click on the icons to get where you need to go.

You can take care of everything with your websites and e-mail addresses in one central location. You can customize the control panel layout to suit your needs. That way, you can quickly access your favorite functions.

Customer Service

Here is one area where Bluehost receives mixed reviews. Many customers report positive experiences with fast, helpful and friendly customer service agents. Unfortunately, many customers say they were unable to get the help they needed, even with numerous phone calls.
Another problem with Bluehost is the over-selling of high-quality products. It's a company that likes to try to sell you add-ons and upgrades, and there are many areas where you absolutely need add-ons for full functionality. This is a problem if you have a tight budget.

Who's Bluehost for?

Customers who are looking for a reliable and reputable hosting provider. Bluehost is one of the oldest names in the industry and has established trust.
WordPress customers who can pay extra for access to more features and a dedicated support team of WP experts.
Owners of large and small businesses. Bluehost is perfect if you have a limited budget and simply want general-purpose shared hosting. Watch out for the high price tag.

Pros of Bluehost :

  • Most plans include unlimited storage space, domain hosting, email addresses, and bandwidth.
  • You get a free domain name for one year, included in your purchase.
  • The enhanced cPanel is really easy to use and offers quick access to features.
  • Bluehost's security features are simply excellent.
  • Many databases are available, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, CGI-BIN, PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby on Rails, and many more.
  • Tons of free website scripts are available, including social networking scripts, blog support, mailing lists, message boards, Joomla and Drupal and Tikiwiki.
  • E-commerce functionality is good, with multiple shopping carts available and SSL security.
  • Most customers report that Bluehost is fast. Integrate them with CloudFlare and you'll get even better performance.
  • If you can afford it, hosting WordPress on Bluehost is considered top-notch.

Cons of Bluehost :

  • Although there are many useful add-ons available, unfortunately, you need to install many of them to get all the functionality you need.
  • The customer service team receives mixed reviews.
  • Bluehost likes to try to sell its customers at a higher price, which can be annoying if you have a tight budget.
  • WordPress plans, while very nice in terms of functionality, are also very expensive compared to the plans offered by many competitors. Inmotion, for example, offers an excellent plan starting at only $2.95 per month. This is less than half the starting price of the cheapest WP plan offered by Bluehost.

Many interesting features and options are included at every price level, and the variety of plans offers great flexibility for every budget. Whatever your needs, Bluehost meets your expectations about its plans.
Despite some negative comments, the majority of customers are quite satisfied with Bluehost's services. It's not for nothing that this company has enjoyed such a good reputation for 20 years of online business!
In summary, Bluehost is literally one of the few companies that I would recommend to anyone. If you're looking for a hosting provider with a rock-solid reputation, look no further than Bluehost. With inexpensive and scalable plans, you can customize your solution, and you'll be up and running in no time.
Bluehost is an absolute must-have web hosting provider - if you can take advantage of an occasional sale (currently 50% off), it's an absolute must!
